Ottawa introduced 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan

On February 14, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released details on the Government of Canada’s 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan. According to the new plan, the Government aims to admit 431,645 new permanent residents this year. In addition, Canada will welcome 447,055 newcomers in 2023 and 451,000 in 2024. Last year, Canada welcomed a record number of immigrants – 405,000 new permanent residents. In the next three years, Ottawa wants to accept even more newcomers to tackle the labour shortage issue in the country and increase the Canadian population.

Canada celebrates the Black History Month

The contributions and achievements of Black people have been celebrated in North America since 1926. Every February, Canada also celebrates Black History Month. This year, the theme of the celebration is “February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day.” The Government of Canada invited all Canadians to learn more about the Black communities, their contributions to Canada, and how they continue to shape the story of Canada. The Black History Month virtual celebration will be held on Facebook, on February 17, 2022, at 7 pm.

Global Affairs Canada offers scholarships for African and Asian international students

Global Affairs Canada offers Study in Canada scholarships for foreign students of certain Asian and African countries. The new student exchange program replaces the full-degree-based Study in Canada Scholarships program piloted in 2020 and allows international students to study or research in Canadian post-secondary institutions at the college, undergraduate, or graduate levels. This year, at least 50 scholarships will be awarded to eligible international students. Each year, the number of awarded students is anticipated to increase, allowing more foreign students to come and study in Canada.

Can we expect Express Entry draws for FSW and CEC candidates in 2022?

With the tabling of a new Immigration Levels Plan, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has clarified its objectives and priorities for immigration targets in 2022. A significant change in the plan is the reduction of the quota for Express Entry immigrants to only 55,900. IRCC also reserved a quota of 40,000 newcomers under the TR2PR program. This means the likelihood of the all-program draws renewal in the coming months is not high. Moreover, given the recent internal memo from the IRCC, we got proof that candidates in the Federal Skilled Workers (FSW) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) have been temporarily deprioritized by the government. IRCC switched their priorities in order to eliminate the backlog of the applications in those programs already in the inventory. At the same time, the quota for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) has been increased to 83,500, which in turn gives more chances to candidates with job offers from the provinces or international graduates, who completed their studies in Canada. All-program draws in the Express Entry may return in late 2022 or in the beginning of 2023.
