Ontario updated application processing times in the OINP

On January 13, 2022, Ontario has updated the average processing time in the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). As of now, the processing time in Ontario’s Express Entry Human Capital Priorities Stream, Express Entry Skilled Trades Stream, Ontario’s Master Graduates Stream and Ph.D. Graduates Stream, Employer Job Offer Foreign Worker, Employer Job Offer International Student Stream, and Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills Stream is 30-60 days. The processing time for Ontario’s Express Entry French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream was 60-90 days. The Expression of Interest (EOI) Assessment in the Entrepreneur Stream still requires less than 30 days, while the application processing depends on the complexity of the business nomination application.

Canada is opening International Experience Canada 2022 season

On January 13, 2022, the Government of Canada announced that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has opened the 2022 season for the International Experience Canada (IEC). As of today, eligible candidates are able to submit their applications to one of the IEC pools – the Working Holiday, the Young Professionals, and the International Co-op. As of January 15, 2022, unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers will not be allowed to enter Canada. The first round of invitations is scheduled for January 14, 2022.

The Government of Ontario issued its first nominations in 2022

On January 13, 2022, the province of Ontario released the first update on the issuance of nomination certificates under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) in 2022. The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development issued nominations to 779 foreign nationals. In 2021, Ontario nominated 8,600 candidates to apply for permanent residence with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). So far, the Federal government has not announced the annual quota allocation under the Provincial Nominee Program.

Changes in the Ontario College of Trades

After the introduction of the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021, the Ontario College of Trades, which is now called Skilled Trades Ontario faced significant changes to the trades registration system in Ontario. As of now, Skilled Trades Ontario does not operate on a membership model. Only the information for applicants practicing compulsory trades will appear on the Skilled Trades Ontario Public Register. These applicants will have to possess a valid Registered Training Agreement, Provisional Certificate of Qualification, or Certificate of Qualification to practice a compulsory trade in the province.

Ontario will accept internationally educated nurses to hospitals

The Government of Ontario is going to deploy internationally educated nurses to hospitals and long-term care homes that face staffing shortages due to the pandemic. On January 11, 2022, Health Minister Christine Elliott announced that international nurses who have applied to practice in Ontario “will have the opportunity to meet their applications requirements by working in healthcare settings under the supervision of a regulated healthcare provider.” She also said that there already were more than 1,200 applicants who expressed their interest. The Government will match these applicants with hospitals and long-term care homes and allow them to work in the province.
