Immigration Minister welcomed Afghan refugees

On December 8, 2021, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), welcomed 265 Afghan refugee families who landed at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Approximately 100 of these families will remain in Nova Scotia, and the rest will be resettled in new homes across Canada. These government-assisted refugees are former NATO employees who have been located in a third country. They arrived in Canada under the Government of Canada’s special humanitarian program for Afghan refugees that aimed to welcome 15,000 individuals.

Canada opened a new pathway for extended family members of Afghan interpreters

On December 9, 2021, the Government of Canada announced a new pathway for the extended family members of Afghan interpreters who immigrated under previous measures in 2009 and 2012. Considering the risk Afghans took to support Canada’s work in their country and understanding that some interpreters’ family members are still in precarious positions as a result of their relationship with the interpreters, the Government provided this pathway to bring as many vulnerable Afghans as possible and help them acquire permanent residency in Canada.
