It is difficult for Canada to reach the immigration target this year amid traffic restrictions at the border

Royal Bank of Canada’s economist Andrew Agopsowicz said in a report that Canada may only bring in 275,000 new immigrants in 2021, which is far less than the immigration target of bringing in 401,000 new immigrants this year. Agopsowicz pointed out that border closures, delays in visa processing, and a small number of immigrants show that the number of new immigrants will remain below the level before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. To make up for the lack of new immigrants coming to Canada last year, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino has set an immigration target of bringing in 401,000 permanent residents for 2021, 411,000 for 2022 and 421,000 for 2023. To achieve these goals, the federal government is considering relaxing the rules for applying for permanent residency by temporary workers and international students already in Canada.
