Canada sent all invitation to Parents and Grandparents sponsors

On January 11, 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the department has completed sending invitations to apply for Parents and Grandparents sponsorship in the 2020 intake. IRCC allocated a quota of 10,000 applications for 2020. All successful sponsorship lottery winners have 60 days to submit the full application. In certain cases, and based on reasonable grounds, IRCC may grant a 90-day extension for those who cannot obtain all required documents due to COVID-19. IRCC emphasized that those who did not get the invitation may try to submit an interest to sponsor form when the 2021 program intake opens. The government promised to accept 30,000 applications in 2021.

Newfoundland and Labrador to invest $700,000 in Economic Immigration

On January 11, 2021, the Minister of Immigration, Skills and Labour of Newfoundland and Labrador Gerry Byrne announced plans of the provincial government to invest in the development of economic immigration. For instance, Newfoundland and Labrador is going to invest over $600,000 in the creation of the Economic Immigration Ideas Lab, which will be located at the Newfoundland and Labrador Workforce Innovation Centre. The new institution will gather representatives of the government and private sectors, as well as the wider public to develop new approaches aimed at increase of immigration to the province. Additional funding of $100,000 from the provincial authorities will allow the opening of a certified CELPIP testing site at the Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus. Those initiatives go in line with the goal to reach 2,500 new permanent residents annually by 2022.

Manitoba release the year-end MPNP nominations statistics

On January 11, 2021, the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) released the final 2020 nominations issuance statistics. In December 2020, the province nominated 304 skilled workers, 3 entrepreneurs, and approved 2 business concepts. In total, MPNP nominated 5,656 foreign nationals, including 5,637 skilled workers and 19 business-candidates. In December Manitoba refused 12 profiles of skilled workers and 1 profile of a business candidate (400 and 8 in the whole year, respectively). In the last month of the year, MPNP invited 607 skilled workers (5,105 since Jan 2020), approved 4 business concepts (102 since Jan 2020) and sent LAAs to 2 business candidates (52 since Jan 2020). MPNP received a total of 4,361 applications from skilled workers and 44 applications from business candidates in 2020. As for Express Entry candidates, in December, Manitoba nominated 43 Express Entry candidates. In total, Manitoba issued 605 nominations for Express Entry candidates in 2020 out of 875 spots allocated by IRCC. The MPNP quota for 2021 will be announced in the following months.

Newfoundland and Labrador has updated the guides for its two business streams

On January 11, 2021, the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism of Newfoundland and Labrador has announced that on January 6, the province updated the guides for the International Entrepreneur and the International Graduate Entrepreneur streams of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP). Both streams allow foreign nationals who operate a business in the province to apply for a permanent residence in Canada.
