“Good news for the international students looking to work in Canada after their graduation”.
The Government of Canada on 14th Feb, 2019 announced changes to its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. Earlier the graduates had to apply for their PGWP within the 90 days of getting final marks from their schools but with this update the graduates now have 180 days to apply for their PGWP program. In other words the international students who wish to work in Canada will now have six months to apply for their Post- Graduate Work Permits after they obtain their notice of graduation.
In addition, the students will no longer be requiring a valid study permit for applying to the PGWP program.
As per Immigrations, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) the study permit of a graduate must only have been valid “at some point” during the period when a graduate applies for the PGWP program.
Earlier the study permits were usually issued for the student’s academic program duration. But now with the removal of the valid study permit requirement, it will be easier for students to collect their documents that will be needed to apply for PGWP without worrying about expiration of the permit.
What is Post Graduation Work Permit?
A post-graduation work permit is an open permit that is issued for a period of up to 3 years to the international students and it allows the graduates of eligible Canadian designated learning Institutions to stay and work in Canada once they complete their studies.
The criteria for being eligible are that the study program of the graduate should be atleast 8 months long and should meet other specified criteria as well.
Another advantage of PGWP is that an applicant need not have a Canadian job offer when applying for the PGWP. With PGWP an applicant can work in any occupation and that too anywhere in Canada and can also change employers at any time.
IRCC believes that the international graduates can qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class, once they gain the skilled Canadian work experience in occupations that have been rated at skill level A or B or skill type 0 under Canada’s national Occupation Classification (NOC).
